Data Implications and Needs of Students

  • Rephrase the question. Ask a related question. Give student a hint, clue, or prompt.

  • Use wait time. Pause to allow students to formulate a response

  • Pause following a student’s response to allow other students to consider their reactions, responses and extensions

  • Pause at least 3-5 seconds to consider the student’s response before affirming, correcting, or probing.

  • Ask higher order questions equitably of high and low achieving students.

  • Ask student to analyze, evaluate, and create

  • Use affirming, correcting, or probing to acknowledge and expand on all students’ responses.

  • Use a random method for calling on students.

  • Use a variety of approaches to monitor students’ understanding throughout instruction, such as Thumbs Up, Unison response, One Question Quiz, Envelope Please, etc

  • Have students model their thought process while performing a task. Encourage students to collaborate with a partner on responses.

  • Use multiple approaches to consistently monitor students’ understanding of instruction.
